CO₂ in your car: the recirculation trap
The smallest occupied room in your life is your car — about three cubic meters. Press the recirculation button and you've sealed it. Nothing in daily life raises CO₂ faster, and you happen to be driving at the time.

Why cabins are special
A bedroom is ~35 m³; a meeting room ~25; a car ~3. Two people exhaling into three cubic meters on recirculation adds CO₂ on the order of 180 ppm every minute (occupant generation rates: Persily 2017). A twenty-minute recirc drive can pass 3,000 ppm — deep in the drowsiness bands. Field measurements across real passenger cabins show exactly this split: recirculation climbs into the thousands, while fresh-air mode settles near 1,000 (Indoor Air review, 2021).
What the two buttons actually mean
- Fresh-air mode (the default on most cars): outside air is pulled through the cabin filter continuously. CO₂ levels off around 800–1,200 ppm. This should be your resting state.
- Recirculation: the cabin re-breathes itself. It cools/heats faster, blocks outside smells — and traps everyone's exhale. It's a sprint button, not a cruise setting.
Does it matter for driving?
Honest answer: no crash statistic can be pinned on cabin CO₂ today. What the chamber studies do show is decision-making measurably duller at 2,500 ppm (Satish 2012) — a level a recirc cabin reaches in under fifteen minutes — and every driver knows the highway drowsiness that lifts, oddly, at a stop with the door open. Cheap fix, plausible upside, zero downside: run fresh.
The rhythm
- Default: fresh-air mode, always.
- Recirc briefly for: tunnels, truck exhaust, a passing skunk, the first minutes of max A/C on a 40°C day. Then back.
- Smoke season: the exception — recirculation + cabin filter is your friend in a plume (smoke guide); flush with fresh air when you're clear of it.
- Fogged windshield: that's humidity from your breath — fresh air + defrost clears what recirc makes worse.
- Long trips: your rest stop is also a CO₂ flush. Doors open, thirty seconds.
Questions
Is my kid asleep in the back seat at risk?
Not acutely — these are drowsiness-and-comfort levels, far from toxic. But a sleeping passenger is also the reason to leave fresh-air mode on, and possibly why they always fall asleep in the car.
Is the cabin filter a HEPA?
Usually not — standard cabin filters catch pollen and dust; some premium ones are rated for fine particles. Either way they filter incoming air, so they only work in fresh-air mode or with recirc during smoke.
