CO₂ in classrooms: the air your kid thinks in
Twenty-five growing bodies, one room, six hours, and an HVAC system chosen by the lowest bidder. Classrooms are among the most under-ventilated everyday spaces — and the evidence links that directly to how well children work.

What the evidence says
- Across 100 US elementary schools, classroom ventilation rates were mostly below the recommended standard — and the schools with more outdoor air per student had measurably better math and reading scores (Haverinen-Shaughnessy 2011; an association, honestly labeled as such).
- In a Danish crossover trial — same children, air quietly changed — pupils completed schoolwork faster on several tasks when classroom ventilation was doubled (Petersen 2016).
- The estimate from generation rates says why: 25 occupants in a typical classroom can add on the order of 1,400 ppm per hour without active ventilation (Persily 2017) — one lesson is enough to leave the well-ventilated band entirely.

What a parent can actually do
- Ask two precise questions (precise questions get real answers): What is the outdoor-air rate per student in my child's classroom? Has anyone measured CO₂ during a normal lesson?
- Offer a monitor, not a fight. A $100 NDIR logger on the teacher's desk for one week turns a vague complaint into a graph the principal can act on.
- Pair it with recess. The same daylight that ventilation buys indoors, outdoor time buys directly — our sister project has the printable school pack (letter to the principal, PTO handout) built on the same evidence-cited model.
For teachers: the zero-budget protocol
- Air the room at every break — windows and door fully open for 3–5 minutes beats a window cracked all lesson (why short-and-hard wins).
- Make it a classroom job. A rotating "air monitor" who opens up at the bell costs nothing and teaches something true.
- If you get a CO₂ readout, let the class see it — the number becomes the reminder, not you.
